It was a sad day today. One of the UK's greatest sports commentators, Harry Carpenter died at the age of 84. While I was listening to the radio on the way home, I heard Harry being interviewed some years ago about his trade and his view of how a sports commentator should behave. I thought these words could be just as apt for many leaders in organisations too and are a fitting tribute to the great man:

"There are far more occasions when you shouldn't be speaking than when you should. I think a lot of newcomers to TV commentary are embarrassed by this...you feel you are getting paid and not doing anything...compulsion comes upon you to say something, anything in order to earn your money. You forget that you are not really there for that, you're there to help people and you must only speak when you feel you can help. It's pointless telling them what they can patently see for themselves".

Great words Harry. Rest in peace.
