Craig Smith The impact of the economic situation on working hours

We are currently running a LinkedIn poll to see how many hours are being worked on average per week by the employed or self-employed.  We are also interested to hear whether this has changed as a result of the current economic climate (either increasing or reducing the number of hours worked).  You can tell us about this using the optional comment feature on the poll if you wish.

We will be sharing the results of the poll in a later blog post and will also provide a breakdown based on…

Craig Smith London Riots August 2011

I have been amazed at the attempts to rationalise the behaviour of the groups of people responsible for destroying large parts of London during the recent riots.  This reminded me of my brief foray into Chaos Theory a few years ago.

Chaos Theory dictates that it is possible that a very small occurance can produce unpredictable and sometimes drastic results by triggering a series of increasingly significant events. I think rationalising the riots as some sort of reaction to a…

Matt Dunn Dan Heath quote

I had the pleasure of seeing two amazing speakers in London last week, Michael Watkins and Dan Heath.

Dan made some very compelling points, one of which was:

“Find the bright spots in your organisation, and then replicate them. Start obsessing about success – not…

Craig Smith The NHS, melting icebergs and change

Interesting to see the massive resistance being generated to the reforms proposed in the NHS at the moment. Many commentators referred yesterday to the fact that any reform to this national institution creates resistance (and there have been a lot of changes in recent years).

There was some debate as to whether, on this occasion it is a case of miscommunication or whether the reforms themselves are fundamentally flawed. As an observer from the "outside", I can't help but think that,… Continue

Craig Smith The "YoYo effect" - What organisational culture change and weight loss have in common

Recently I saw an interview with the Chief Science Officer of a famous Weight Loss service provider.  The interviewer probed his female guest to explore how committed her company was to helping their clients to achieve long-term weight loss.  He was interested in finding out that if "yo-yo" dieting actually suited the company as it meant that clients built a long-term dependency to its services. This reminded me of a recent conversation with a coronary heart surgeon at a networking event.  I…

Craig Smith What drives sustainable organisational performance?

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has revealed the key to what drives sustainable organisation performance with the publication of its two-year action research and engagement programme.  Tracking the progress of six organisations undertaking change programmes, as well as drawing insight from the 11,000 practitioners in a dedicated network through round table events, polls and online discussions, the research draws conclusions around sustaining performance through…

Craig Smith The "Customer Service" paradox?

I attended an event today which was themed around delivering "amazing" customer service.  The opening speaker talked about general principles and how complaint handling was the biggest driver of perceived customer service. However, the constant references to "The Customer Service Department within your organisation" seemed alien to me. Okay, maybe this is a personal values thing and maybe the fact that as the owner of a small company, I…

Craig Smith Is 7 the "Magic Number"?

According to John Kotter, the second step in planning and leading a successful change process is to create a team to guide the decision making about the change. Members of the team should balance leadership with management skills, should be the ‘right people’ in terms of peer group credibility and trust, and who have (or can make) time available to focus on effective teamwork and guiding the change project.

When working with clients we often get asked "How big should a guiding team…

Craig Smith The "Melting Iceberg" dilemma in the North East of England.

Today I attended a briefing hosted by Ernst and Young's ITEM Club supported by the Entrepreneurs Forum in the North East of England.  There was some interesting information shared regarding the state and outlook for the North East economy as well as a look at the national UK picture.  I could not help but draw parallels between what was being presented and John Kotter's 2006 book, "Our Iceberg is Melting".  In this book (which is a fable) a colony of penguins discovers its iceberg is falling…

Craig Smith Is something missing from your business improvement initiative?

A recent study in the UK by Executives Online found that around 40% of UK businesses are currently looking to implement cost reduction, restructuring and business improvement activities. However they found that only 15% of 1250 executives interviewed thought these changes were managed “Quite Well” or “Fairly Well”. In the same survey a staggering 58% rated them as managed “Fairly Poorly” or “Quite Poorly”. The study showed that in the opinion of the respondents, leadership and communication of… Continue

Craig Smith How influential can a change agent be?

Very interesting post from change thought-leader and Flint for Change member Daryl Conner:

If anyone is looking for a great book on change, I thoroughly recommend Daryl's classic "Managing at the Speed of Change". I was introduced to it early in my career as a…

Craig Smith Lessons from a sports presenter

It was a sad day today. One of the UK's greatest sports commentators, Harry Carpenter died at the age of 84. While I was listening to the radio on the way home, I heard Harry being interviewed some years ago about his trade and his view of how a sports commentator should behave. I thought these words could be just as apt for many leaders in organisations too and are a fitting tribute to the great man:

"There are…

Craig Smith To Master Change, First Dread It!

An interesting piece by Rosabeth Moss Kanter:

It seems this has strong overtones of John Kotter's first step in his 8-step change leadership model, namely "Create A Sense of Urgency". It seems Kanter and Kotter both feel that appreciating the downside of not changing and being clear on what…

Craig Smith Change Is Hardest in the Middle

I found this great blog post from the Harvard thought-leader Rosabeth Moss Kanter.

This article addresses the real issues faced when in the middle of change when (as John Kotter calls it) the temptation to "Let up too soon" or just plain give up is as its…

Craig Smith Immediate versus long term implications of not changing

I was listening to the coverage of the Copenhagen Climate Conference yesterday and heard an interesting contribution during a phone in.

The caller commented on the fact that mobilising action on climate change is so hard as the effects are (relatively) slow and the impact on not changing is a "creeping" one. It is much easier to mobilise action when the effects are acute and the impact immediate and visible to all.

How do you deal with "creeping" change in your… Continue

Craig Smith Measuring change readiness

Recently I was working with a client who's industry is facing massive levels of change over the coming years driven by deregulation.

We put all members of the team through the "Change Style Indicator" (see http://www.discoverylearning.com/products/change-style-indicator.aspx). The survey threw up some really interesting results. 58% of the team were inclined to prefer to deal with change in an… Continue
